Anchor Building 101
The Anchor Building course is great for climbers with some experience climbing indoors or outside who are interested in learning the fundamental concepts of setting up top rope anchor systems on their own.
Through a mixture of discussion and hands-on practice, we will cover a variety of different anchor configurations and learn to use sound judgment in deciding which to employ. By the end of the class, participants will be able to climb on an anchor that they have built themselves. Depending on the experience level and interest of the group, we may dive deeper into additional technical skills, but at the very least we will cover the following:
Understanding top rope climbing gear
Route selection
Essential knots such as the bowline, clove hitch, and BHK overhand
Traditional climbing gear
SECURE anchors using bolts, natural materials, and trad gear
Protecting yourself near the cliff edge
Climbing on a anchor you build
