Anchor Building 101

The Anchor Building course is great for climbers with some experience climbing indoors or outside who are interested in learning the fundamental concepts of setting up top rope anchor systems on their own. 

Through a mixture of discussion and hands-on practice, we will cover a variety of different anchor configurations and learn to use sound judgment in deciding which to employ. By the end of the class, participants will be able to climb on an anchor that they have built themselves. Depending on the experience level and interest of the group, we may dive deeper into additional technical skills, but at the very least we will cover the following:

Understanding top rope climbing gear

  • Route selection

  • Essential knots such as the bowline, clove hitch, and BHK overhand

  • Traditional climbing gear

  • SECURE anchors using bolts, natural materials, and trad gear

  • Protecting yourself near the cliff edge

  • Climbing on a anchor you build

  • Cleaning and rappelling

  • Cragging area ethics, Leave No Trace, and safety concerns

  • AMGA Certified Single Pitch Instructor

  • Personal Climbing Equipment if needed (Harness, Helmet, Shoes, Belay Device)

  • Group Climbing Equipment (ropes, anchors, etc.)

Recommended Experience:

  • Familiarity with basic climbing knots

  • Belay experience and/or certification
